43rd Annual ICG PUBLICISTS AWARDS, Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills. Nominees were announced January 9, 2006. Jimmy Kimmel emceed the luncheon. The International Cinematographers Guild Publicists Awards honor excellence in publicity and promotion for motion pictures and television programs. According to the Camera Guild, no other event celebrates the publicists’ contribution to the entertainment industry. Barry Meyer, Chairman and CEO, and Alan Horn, President and COO of Warner Bros., were honored with the guild's Motion Picture Showmanship Award. The award was presented to the duo by Oscar winning actress Hilary Swank. Actress Teri Hatcher presented Stephen McPherson, President of ABC Entertainment, with the 2006 Television Showman of the Year award. Variety columnist Army Archerd, who recently retired from his daily column but continues as one of the paper’s reporters, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Kirk Douglas; Bob Dowling, who just retired as Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of the Hollywood Reporter, received a Special Award of Merit. Additional celebrity presenters included Academy Award winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, Delta Burke, SAG President Alan Rosenberg, and Lisa Rinna and Louis Van Amstel from "Dancing With the Stars."

53rd Annual GOLDEN REEL AWARDS, Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills. Each year the Motion Picture Sound Editors presents the MPSE Golden Reel Awards, a black tie ceremony honoring the finest sound editing in motion pictures and television, including the areas of Dialogue & ADR, Effects & Foley, and Music. 2006 MPSE nominations were announced 1/24/06. Music Editor Else Blangsted received the org's inaugural Career Achievement Award. And how is this for refreshing honesty? - "I deserve it," Blangsted said. "Most people who receive an honor such as this feel they deserve it, but they don't say so." In four decades, she has amassed nearly 100 feature film credits, including 1979's "The Great Santini," 1980's "Ordinary People" and 1985's "The Color Purple." Our congratulations to Ms. Blangsted! 21st INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS, on the beach, Santa Monica, CA. Hosted by Sarah Silverman. Nominations for the 2006 Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced by Mark Ruffalo and Laura Linney on 11/29/05. Spirit Award presenters included Billy Baldwin, Willem Dafoe, Julie Delpy, Vin Diesel, Matt Dillon, Michael Ealy, Aaron Eckhart, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Laura Linney, Josh Lucas, Virginia Madsen, Sienna Miller, Sandra Oh, Dennis Quaid, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Smith, Lili Taylor and Ziyi Zhang. Naomi Watts served as this year's honorary chair for the Indy Spirit celebration and also presented the Best Feature award. An annual highlight of the Spirit Awards is the musical introduction of films nominated for Best Feature. This year the singing celebrities were actually good! They included Peter Gallagher's rendition of "On Top of Old Brokeback," Richard Kind's tribute to "Good Night, and Good Luck" sung to the tune from "The Beverly Hillbillies," Zooey Deschanel and Alessandro Nivolo's dance number, "You're the One That I (Don't) Want" ("The Squid and the Whale"), Dwight Yokum's C&W serenade for "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" and Macy Gray's re-worked Norah Jones ballad for "Capote."

The Spirit Awards ceremony was preceded by a half-hour red carpet show on the WE Channel. The colorful awards show aired live and uncensored on IFC (Independent Film Channel) at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET. 26th Annual RAZZIE AWARDS, Ivar Theater, Hollywood. Golden Raspberry Awards nominations announced 1/30/06. This year's Razzie Award winners include Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, as worst screen couple in "Bewitched".

 

20th Annual SOUL TRAIN MUSIC AWARDS, Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Pasadena, CA. Co-hosted by Vivica A. Fox and Tyrese Gibson. Quincy Jones himself appeared to present the annual Quincy Jones Awards to Jamie Foxx and Destiny's Child. Stevie Wonder handed the first ever Stevie Wonder Award to R. Kelly and John Legend was honored with the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year. STMA nominations announced 2/2/06. SoulTrain.com.

78th Annual ACADEMY AWARDS, Kodak Theater, Hollywood. Hosted by Jon Stewart. Oscar nominations announced 1/31/06. Director / producer / writer Robert Altman received an honorary Oscar to commemorate "a career that has repeatedly reinvented the art form and inspired filmmakers and audiences alike." Last year's Best Actress Hilary Swank, Best Actor Jamie Foxx, Best Supporting Actor Morgan Freeman and Best Director Clint Eastwood were scheduled presenters at the 78th Oscars Presentation, however Tom Hanks stepped in for Clint Eastwood at the last minute. Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, Eric Bana, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell, Gorgeous George Clooney, Will Ferrell, Jake Gyllenhaal, Selma Hayek, Terrence Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Rachel McAdams, Jack Nicholson, Queen Latifah, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Meryl Streep, Ben Stiller, Charlize Theron, Lily Tomlin, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Naomi Watts, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Ziyi Zhang also presented the prestigious award. Previously unannounced celebrity presenters included Lauren Bacall. Dolly Parton performed her nominated original song, "Travelin' Thru" from "Transamerica." Kathleen "Bird" York performed "In the Deep" from the film "Crash," and Jordon "Juicy J" Houston, Paul "DJ Paul" Beauregard, Cedric "Frayser Boy" Coleman and Darnell "Crunchy Black" Carlton of the Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia also performed at the 78th Academy Awards, with Taraji P. Henson, the actress who sang the hook in the film. The song was the first rap song ever performed on the telecast in the history of the Academy Awards - and became the first rap song to ever win an Oscar!

26th Annual GENIE AWARDS, Toronto. Presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. The 2006 Prix Genie nominations were announced 1/25/06. Official website.

 

21st Annual ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY, Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York City. The R&R HOF Class of 2006 inductees, announced 11/28/05, are Black Sabbath, Miles Davis, the Sex Pistols, Blondie and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The founders of A&M Records, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards in the non-performer category. Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released. Rock Hall official website.

 

SHOWEST 2006, Bally's and Paris Hotels, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 13 - 16. The 2006 ShoWest Awards Ceremony takes place on the final night of the three day motion picture industry convention (see below for details). The complete schedule of events is available on the official website.

20th Annual GENESIS AWARDS, Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills. For twenty years, the Genesis Awards have been honoring individuals in the news and entertainment media whose outstanding works have spotlighted animal issues with courage, creativity and integrity. The Twentieth Anniversary Genesis Awards will celebrate both the coverage of 2005 and the most memorable moments of the past two decades. Also this year, HSUS special Guests of Honor will be the Heroes of Katrina - those individuals in the major media who shined a bright spotlight on the plight of animals during the Gulf Coast disaster. The segment will be hosted by Ben Stein. Film and TV celebrities lending their support as presenters at this year's Genesis Awards are (tba). 4th Annual TV LAND AWARDS, Barker Hanger, Santa Monica. Hosted by Megan Mullally. Throughout the two-hour telecast, TV Land will feature dozens of celebrated past and present TV performers as well as musical tributes, show parodies and reunions of some of the most iconic casts from televisions' most beloved shows. The 2006 celebration of classic TV will premiere on TV Land Wednesday, March 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. TV Land Awards 2006.

17th Annual GLAAD MEDIA AWARDS, Marriott Marquis, New York City (also: April 8 - Hollywood. May 25 - Miami. June 10 - San Francisco.) The GLAAD Media Awards honor gay/lesbian achievements in various fields of media work, including film and television, theatre, music, print media and advertising.
