The 2006 Palm Springs Film Festival opened with New Line's The New World, directed by Terrence Malick and starring Colin Farrell, Q’orianka Kilcher, Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer. In all, the Festival offered 86 film premieres showcasing the diversity of international cinema. As part of the Awards Buzz program, the Festival screened 51 of the official submissions to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Foreign Language Film. Kong, the star of Peter Jackson's King Kong, received the Distinguished Achievement in Performing Arts Award at the Critics' Choice Awards gala *. The BFCA also honored George Clooney with its Freedom Award "for illuminating our shared values of freedom, tolerance and democracy" as director, co-writer and co-star of Good Night, and Good Luck. The award was presented to Clooney by friend Julia Roberts. 3rd Annual PENFOLDS ICON BLACK TIE GALA, the Hollywood Paladium, Hollywood. The Penfolds Gala is the headline event of G'Day LA: Australia Week in Los Angeles (January 14 - 22, 2006). This dinner honors three high profile individuals for significant contributions in their industries and for excellence in promoting Australia in the United States. An Australian style dinner is prepared by one of Australia's celebrity chefs, Neil Perry, with all of the food products and produce flown in from Australia for the occasion. At the 2006 Penfolds Gala, Hugh Jackman was given an award for excellence in entertainment. Olivia Newton John received a lifetime achievement award presented by John Travolta. INXS performed for the Gala Dinner on January 14 and also at a special January 15 private concert at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Trivia: it was at the 2nd Annual Penfolds Dinner on January 15, 2005 that Nicole Kidman met Keith Urban. They began dating soon after and one year later, rumors are flying that the couple is now engaged to be married. |

ACADEMY AWARDS - Original Song Bake Off. On 12/15/05, AMPAS announced the 42 original songs eligible for the 78th Academy Awards. In order to make this list, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original, and be written specifically for the film. The Academy screened three-minute clips of each song in random order for music branch voting members on January 17 and January 23, then members were asked to vote for three - five songs for Oscar consideration. The final nominees for achievement in music written for motion pictures (original song): "In the Deep" from Crash, "It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow and "Travelin’ Thru" from Transamerica. |
