DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS - feature film nominees announced. DGA motion picture best director nominations went to George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Paul Haggis (Crash), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), Bennett Miller (Capote) and Steven Spielberg (Munich). Winner will be announced at the DGA awards on 1/28/06.

17th Annual PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - 1/5 through 1/16/06; awards gala 1/7/06. The 2006 Palm Springs Film Festival opened with New Line's The New World, directed by Terrence Malick and starring Colin Farrell, Q’orianka Kilcher, Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer. In all, the Festival offered 86 film premieres showcasing the diversity of international cinema. As part of the Awards Buzz program, the Festival screened 51 of the official submissions to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Foreign Language Film. SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS - nominations announced. SAG Awards presented 1/29/06. Ellen Pompeo of Grey’s Anatomy and Benjamin Bratt of E-Ring joined Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg to announce the nominees for the 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® at 6:07 a.m. PT from the SilverScreen Theater at the Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles. The announcement was telecast live on TNT and on E! Entertainment Television’s half-hour SAG Awards™ Nominations special. SAG nominations are watched closely by the industry as a precursor of possible Oscar and Emmy recognition. The Broadcast Film Critics Association awards were broadcast live on the WB television network. Kong, the star of Peter Jackson's King Kong, received the Distinguished Achievement in Performing Arts Award at the Critics' Choice Awards gala *. The BFCA also honored George Clooney with its Freedom Award "for illuminating our shared values of freedom, tolerance and democracy" as director, co-writer and co-star of Good Night, and Good Luck. 6th Annual AFI AWARDS LUNCHEON, Four Seasons Hotel, Los Angeles. The 2005 AFI Award honorees were announced 12/11/05 following two days of jury deliberations. The 10 AFI Movies of the Year (Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Good Night, And Good Luck, A History of Violence, King Kong, Munich, The Squid and the Whale, Syriana), Television Programs of the Year (24, Battlestar Galatica, Deadwood, Grey's Anatomy, House, Lost, Rescue Me, Sleeper Cell, Sometimes In April, Veronica Mars) and Moments of Significance are determined by AFI's unique selection process. BAFTA AWARDS - deadline for qualifying films to be screened in the UK to a public paying audience for no fewer than 7 consecutive days, unless the film opens on or prior to this date.

USC SCRIPTER AWARDS - preliminary winners announced. Due to a tie between Capote and Syriana, a runoff vote determined this year's winning film, with the final results announced 1/18/06. The Scripter Award is the only award that recognizes both author and screenwriter for a film adaptation. 3rd Annual PENFOLDS ICON BLACK TIE GALA, the Hollywood Paladium, Hollywood. The Penfolds Gala is the headline event of G'Day LA: Australia Week in Los Angeles (January 14 - 22, 2006). This dinner honors three high profile individuals for significant contributions in their industries and for excellence in promoting Australia in the United States. An Australian style dinner is prepared by one of Australia's celebrity chefs, Neil Perry, with all of the food products and produce flown in from Australia for the occasion. At the 2006 Penfolds Gala, Hugh Jackman was given an award for excellence in entertainment. Olivia Newton John received a lifetime achievement award presented by John Travolta. INXS performed for the Gala Dinner on January 14 and also at a special January 15 private concert at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Trivia: it was at the 2nd Annual Penfolds Dinner on January 15, 2005 that Nicole Kidman met Keith Urban. They began dating soon after and one year later, rumors are flying that the couple is now engaged to be married.

12th Annual BAFTA/LA TEA PARTY, Park Hyatt Hotel, Century City. The BAFTA/LA Tea Party has a long tradition of recognizing the very best filmmaking talent by honoring British and American Academy nominees. Now a staple in the awards season calendar, this event allows members and guests to relax and enjoy an old-fashioned British Tea Party just prior to the nominations (for Awards shows) being announced. The Tea Party is a uniquely elegant affair, and has therefore become hugely popular with nominees seeking a respite from the hectic and demanding awards season (from BAFTA/LA website).

According to preliminary Nielsen ratings, NBC's Golden Globes telecast drew about 18.7 million viewers - 2 million more than last year, when Nielsen Media Research estimated that the show averaged 16.7 million viewers, a decrease of nearly 40% from 2004's average of 26.8 million viewers.

ACADEMY AWARDS - Original Song Bake Off. On 12/15/05, AMPAS announced the 42 original songs eligible for the 78th Academy Awards. In order to make this list, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original, and be written specifically for the film. The Academy screened three-minute clips of each song in random order for music branch voting members on January 17 and January 23, then members were asked to vote for three - five songs for Oscar consideration. The final nominees for achievement in music written for motion pictures (original song): "In the Deep" from Crash, "It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow and "Travelin’ Thru" from Transamerica.

17th Annual PRODUCERS GUILD AWARDS, Universal Hilton Hotel, Universal City, CA. PGA nominations announced 1/4/06. Hosted by Queen Latifah. Presenters included Will Smith, Tyler James Williams, Felicity Huffman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alfre Woodard, Stockard Channing, Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh. The film Good Night, and Good Luck received PGA's Stanley Kramer Award, honoring movies that shed light on social issues. The film’s producer and co-writer, Grant Heslov, accepted the prize. Clint Eastwood received the PGA's Milestone Award for contributions to the movie industry, Roger Corman was presented with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures and Norman Lear received the PGA Achievement Award in Television. America Online CEO Jon Miller received PGA's Vanguard Award in recognition of AOL's Webcast of the Live 8 concert events, which took place July 2, 2005 in London, Edinburgh, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on 1/9/06 the seven films in consideration for Achievement in Sound Editing for the 78th Academy Awards: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Memoirs of a Geisha, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Walk the Line and War of the Worlds. Ten-minute clips from each film were screened for the nominating committee, then members voted to nominate three of the films for Oscar® consideration (bolded titles indicate Oscar nominees). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on 12/16/05 the seven films in consideration for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 78th Academy Awards: Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds. Epatha Merkerson, Thandie Newton, Jaime Pressly, Randy Quaid, Emmy Rossum, Geoffrey Rush, David Strathairn and Ziyi Zhang. Clint Eastwood received the Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished career in motion picture directing. Donald Jacob received the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award for an Associate Director or Stage Manager and Jerry H. Ziesmer received the Frank Capra Achievement Award which is given to an Assistant Director or Unit Production Manager, both in recognition of career achievement in the industry and service to the Directors Guild of America, while Joseph R. Shirley Temple Black, who captivated the world as a child star, then served her country as an eminent diplomat over more than three decades, was honored with SAG's most prestigious recognition - the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. The award was presented to her by Dakota Fanning and Jamie Lee Curtis. Naveen Andrews, Amy Adams, Patricia Arquette, Benjamin Bratt, Pierce Brosnan, Sandra Bullock, Morgan Freeman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Hayes, Marg Helgenberger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Terrence Howard, Felicity Huffman, Heath Ledger, Eva Longoria, William H.
